Roles and Responsibilities

Samsung Electronics Canada is seeking a Research Scientist in Machine Learning to join the SAIT AI Lab (SAIL) Montreal, a newly established academic-style research lab whose mission is to advance our fundamental understanding of deep learning technology and its applications. The candidate is expected to conduct world-class research in machine learning.

Responsibilities
- Conduct original research in machine learning related to (but not limited to): optimization and generalization in machine learning, with applications to structured data such as in machine translation or speech recognition.
- Publish academic papers in leading scientific conferences and communicate their results.
- Collaborate with other lab members and visitors.

Skills and Requirements

- Has a Ph.D. in computer science or related field (or is about to get one).
- A proven publication record in top machine learning venues (NIPS, ICML, ICLR, AISTATS, etc.)

SAIL Montreal

SAIL Montreal (SAIT AI Lab Montreal) is a newly established academic-style research lab (in close collaboration with Mila) whose mission is to advance our fundamental understanding of deep learning technology and its applications. Headed by Simon Lacoste-Julien, professor in computer science at Université de Montréal and co-founding member of Mila, SAIL is located in Mila's corporate space at the heart of the Montreal AI ecosystem nearby Element AI, Borealis AI, FAIR, Microsoft Research and others where an open collaborative environment is encouraged.

Key early research themes for the lab are optimization and generalization in machine learning, with applications to structured data such as in machine translation or speech recognition. Interaction with visitors from the AI and S/W research center from SAIT (Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology) in Korea is encouraged. Their research interests include deep learning, visual and speech recognition, autonomous driving, and chip design automation, among others.
